Creating the Perfect Wreath

Finally, it's wreath season! Here’s everything you need to create a beautiful wreath from scratch:

Gather Your Supplies

I love starting with a grapevine wreath, floral wire, and a good pair of garden shears or clippers—everything can be found at craft stores like Michael’s.

Choose Your Color Story

For a natural, sophisticated look, think tonally! Different textures in similar colors add depth and elegance. For something bolder, consider complementary colors (opposites on the color wheel) for a splash of impact. There are no hard rules, though—it’s your creation, so feel free to experiment and see what inspires you.

Visualize Your Design

Are you creating a full wreath, a crescent moon, or maybe an asymmetric shape? Planning your layout beforehand can help you estimate the right amount of materials and keep the design process smooth, allowing you to freely balance color, texture, and shape.

Sourcing Florals

Don’t overlook the beauty around you! Foraged finds from neighborhood walks or local parks can make stunning, unique additions—just be mindful of foraging respectfully. Local florists are also a great resource, often carrying dried or preserved florals, and craft stores have a variety to choose from as well.

Add Seasonal Elements

Pine cones, thistle, poppy seed heads, dried ferns, or even ribbons can give your wreath that extra seasonal touch.

Let’s Get Designing

Start by making mini bundles of flowers to create a cohesive look. Arrange them on the wreath before securing, and once you’re happy, anchor one end of the floral wire to the underside of the wreath. Loop and twist for a solid hold. Attach each bundle tightly, placing each new one slightly over the last to hide the previous wire. Vary the angles of each bundle to add dimension, and group different florals together to mimic natural growth patterns.

Trust the Process

It may look a bit unbalanced at first, but keep going! Continue wiring your bundles securely until you’re finished, tying off at the end as you started.

Once you’re comfortable, you can even try designing without pre-made bundles, giving you more freedom in your wreath-making.

Happy wreath-making! Remember to enjoy the process and trust your creative instincts—I can’t wait to see what you create.

Much love,

Kim
